Notes for LAURA PEARL STRICKLAND:
Obituary:
Laura Pearl (STRICKLAND) Cason, a resident of Lamesa, Texas for the past
sixty-three years, passed away on December 24, 1999, at Midland Memorial
Hospital. She was 90 years old. She was born on January 8, 1909 in Waxahachie,
Texas, to Henry and Lula Mae Strickland. She was one of four children. Her
father owned and operated Strickland & Sons Jewelers in Waxahachie as
well as serving as an itinerant Methodist preacher. She spent all of her
childhood in Waxahachie and enjoyed telling her children about her family
trips to Georgia and North Carolina in their Model "T" to vist relatives
and cousins. Mrs. Cason received her teaching degree from Trinity University.
While living in Waxahachie, she taught grades 1-8 in a "one-room" classroom.
She married Ben Cason on November 11, 1930 in Marietta, Oklahoma. When the
Waxahachie School Board found out she had gone to Oklahoma to be married,
she was quickly dismissed, since at that time the custom was that "young"
married women should not instruct young children until a respectable period
of time had passed after the marriage.
They moved from Waxahachie to Lamesa in 1936. During World War II, her husband
was stationed in San Diego, California where she and her children would live
for a short time on the Coronado Naval Base. They then returned to Lamesa
where she taught and substituted in the Lamesa school system, until she went
to work for Ebbie Lee Insurance Company. She worked in this job for many
years, until her retirement in the early 1980s. She was a member of the Lamesa
First Baptist Church for over 50 years, where she served as a Sunday School
teacher and department secretary for different age groups in the church.
Mrs. Cason was preceded in death by her husband in 1978, as well as her sister
and two brothers.
Mrs. Cason loved her church, her work, and her family, especially her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They will miss the love and care which
she showed to each one. Her own children will remember her in special ways
... staying up all night to sew clothes for special occasions, making sure
piano lessons were practiced, taking them to Taos and Red River, New Mexico
every summer for great fun in square dancing and fishing, letting them all
have any and all kinds of pets, and instilling in them the desire to learn
and to do the best at whatever task was at hand. They will miss her, but
never forget her.
